Background

The company acquired an ageing corner building for its headquarters. The facade was tired and anonymous; inside, reception, meetings and everyday work all needed a home.

Thinking

  1. Problem

A whole-building renewal on a modest budget: how does an old frame carry a new company’s presence?

  2. Judgement

The facade is the brand — a corner site is the best billboard the company will ever own. Inside, a Japanese vocabulary sets the ritual of arrival.

  3. Design

A dark stone base, timber louvres and a curved glass corner form the new skin; at night the whole building glows like a lantern. Reception is a sequence of kumiko screens, stone counters and concealed light. Renders and completion photographs are placed side by side — fidelity is the test.

I was responsible for the facade renewal and interior design, lighting and signage, and followed the project through to completion. About me →

Process

Process material — sketches, plans, material boards and site photographs — is being compiled and will follow.

The render and the photograph match almost exactly. In the end, a design is proved by the built space.
