Background

The owner’s brief: turn a compact apartment into a lettable guesthouse — durable, easy to clean, photogenic, and firmly on budget.

Thinking

  1. Problem

Twenty-five square metres must hold sleeping, eating, working, luggage and bathing.

  2. Judgement

In a small room the key is not fitting things in — it is order. One continuous horizontal line puts every function in its place.

  3. Design

A full wall of joinery and a concealed light cove draw that continuous datum; blue textiles and art give the room a colour to remember it by; a black shower cabin and timber-look panels keep cost down without losing texture.

I was responsible for planning, interior design, joinery and lighting, and supported the construction stage. About me →

Process

Process material — sketches, plans, material boards and site photographs — is being compiled and will follow.

Now in operation — and everyday use is the most honest test a design can get.
